Employment Information


A Steel Fixer is responsible for positioning and securing steel reinforcing bars (rebar) and steel mesh used in reinforced concrete construction. This role is essential in ensuring the strength and durability of structures such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, and roads.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret construction drawings and blueprints.
  • Measure, cut, bend, and shape steel bars and mesh to required specifications.
  • Position and fix steel bars and mesh using tools such as rebar benders, cutters, and tying equipment.
  • Tie rebar together using wire, clips, or welding techniques to form reinforcement structures.
  • Ensure the correct placement of rebar within concrete forms.
  • Work closely with other construction professionals such as formwork carpenters and concrete workers.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with engineering specifications and safety standards.
  • Follow health and safety regulations and maintain a clean work environment.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience in construction or a similar trade, preferably in steel fixing or rebar work.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and plans.
  • Proficient in using hand and power tools relevant to the trade.
  • Good physical condition; able to lift heavy materials and work in various weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and safety.
  • Team player with good communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Certification or training in steel fixing or reinforced concrete construction.
  • CSCS card (or regional equivalent, depending on location).
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes and safety regulations.

Working Conditions:

  • Outdoor construction sites.
  • Often involves working at heights or in confined spaces.
  • May require overtime, weekend, or shift work depending on project demands.
