Pipe Fitter Job Description

Summary:
A Pipe Fitter is responsible for laying out, assembling, installing, and maintaining piping systems used in heating, cooling, steam, ventilation, and industrial processes. Work is done according to blueprints, drawings, or written instructions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications.
• Cut, thread, bend, and weld pipes to required angles using hand or power tools and machines.
• Assemble and install pipes and tubing made from materials such as iron, steel, copper, plastic, or other materials.
• Secure pipes to structures with brackets, clamps, and tools.
• Inspect and test piping systems for leaks using pressure gauges and other equipment.
• Repair and maintain piping systems, including replacing worn parts.
• Work with welders, plumbers, and other tradespeople on complex installations.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• Proficiency in reading technical drawings and blueprints.
• Knowledge of pipe systems and various materials (e.g., stainless steel, carbon steel, PVC).
• Skilled in using pipe-fitting tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic instruments.
• Good physical condition and ability to work in tight or high spaces.
• Trade certification or apprenticeship (varies by country/region).
• Safety training (e.g., OSHA, WHMIS) and compliance.

Work Environment:

• Typically works in industrial facilities, construction sites, power plants, refineries, or commercial buildings.
• May work in confined spaces, at heights, or in outdoor conditions.
• Requires wearing protective gear and following strict safety procedures.
