The Generator Technician installs, maintains, and repairs diesel, gas, and natural gas-powered generators for residential, commercial, and industrial clients. They ensure that all generator systems operate efficiently and reliably, especially during power outages or critical load demands.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install and commission new generator systems and associated equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, coolant checks, and battery inspections.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues in generators.
- Conduct load tests and ensure optimal generator performance.
- Maintain service records and complete job-related documentation.
- Respond to emergency service calls and troubleshoot on-site problems.
- Ensure compliance with local codes and safety standards.
- Inspect fuel systems, exhaust systems, and control panels for functionality and safety.
- Communicate with clients to explain repair options and maintenance requirements.
- Update knowledge regularly with training on newer generator models and technologies.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED (technical school or associate degree preferred).
- Experience with diesel, gas, or natural gas generators (e.g., Cummins, Generac, Kohler, Caterpillar).
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, wiring, and schematics.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and mechanical/electrical hand tools.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to job sites.
- Physical ability to lift heavy equipment and work in various environments.
Preferred Certifications:
- EGSA (Electrical Generating Systems Association) Certification
- OSHA Safety Certification
- Manufacturer-specific training (e.g., Generac Certified Technician)
