Employment Information

6G TIG & ARC Welder CS/SS Description

6G Welding Position:

  • The 6G position is one of the most challenging welding positions.
  • The pipe or workpiece is fixed at a 45-degree angle and cannot be rotated, requiring the welder to weld all around the joint.
  • It involves welding in all positions: overhead, vertical, horizontal, and flat, often referred to as the “fixed pipe” position.
  • It tests a welder’s skill, dexterity, and control.

TIG Welding (Tungsten Inert Gas) for CS/SS:

  • TIG welding uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld.
  • Shielding gas, typically argon or argon-based mixtures, protects the weld area from atmospheric contamination.
  • Offers precise control over the weld bead, making it ideal for thin materials or critical welds.
  • Produces high-quality, clean welds with minimal spatter.
  • Preferred for stainless steel (SS) and thinner carbon steel (CS) applications where appearance and weld integrity are important.
  • Requires skilled operators, especially in 6G position due to the complexity.

ARC Welding (Shielded Metal Arc Welding - SMAW) for CS/SS:

  • Also called stick welding.
  • Uses a consumable electrode coated in flux to lay the weld.
  • The flux coating generates a shielding gas and slag to protect the weld pool.
  • More tolerant of dirty or rusty materials compared to TIG.
  • Suitable for carbon steel (CS) and stainless steel (SS), especially in thicker sections.
  • Commonly used in construction, pipeline, and maintenance welding.
  • In the 6G position, it demands strong technique to control weld pool and slag removal.

Applications:

  • Pipeline construction and repair.
  • Pressure vessels and boilers.
  • Structural steelworks requiring high-integrity welds.
  • Petrochemical and power plant piping systems.
  • Aerospace and automotive applications requiring precision welding on stainless steel.
