HVAC Inspector Job Description

Position Summary:

The HVAC Inspector is responsible for inspecting, evaluating, and ensuring that heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings comply with relevant codes, regulations, and safety standards. This role involves performing routine inspections, reporting deficiencies, and providing recommendations for corrective action.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field inspections of HVAC installations and systems to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building and mechanical codes.
  • Review HVAC plans, blueprints, and specifications for accuracy and code compliance.
  • Inspect ductwork, refrigeration systems, boilers, furnaces, air handlers, and ventilation systems.
  • Identify non-compliant installations or safety hazards and issue notices or citations when necessary.
  • Work closely with contractors, engineers, and building owners to provide guidance and recommendations for compliance.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, maintain accurate records, and document inspection findings.
  • Stay current with updates to mechanical codes and HVAC technologies.
  • Assist in developing inspection procedures and protocols.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; technical certification or associate degree in HVAC technology or mechanical systems preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in HVAC installation, repair, or inspection.
  • Knowledge of mechanical codes (e.g., International Mechanical Code, Uniform Mechanical Code).
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., EPA 608, ICC Mechanical Inspector Certification, NATE) are a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to read technical drawings and schematics.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to inspection sites.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a variety of environments, including construction sites, rooftops, and mechanical rooms.
  • May involve climbing ladders, crawling in tight spaces, and exposure to temperature extremes.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is often required.
