A Rigging Supervisor plays a critical leadership role in both animation/VFX studios and live-action film or stage productions. The role focuses on overseeing the creation and management of character and object rigs—skeletons, controls, and deformers that animators use to move digital assets.

Job Summary:
The Rigging Supervisor leads the rigging team in developing, implementing, and maintaining high-quality rigs for characters, creatures, props, and environments. This role ensures rigs are animator-friendly, technically robust, and meet the artistic and production goals of the project. The Rigging Supervisor works closely with the Animation, Modeling, CFX, and Pipeline departments to support a seamless production workflow.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise the rigging team throughout the production lifecycle.
- Design and develop character, creature, and prop rigs that meet animation requirements and technical constraints.
- Work with the Animation Director and CG Supervisor to define rigging standards and performance criteria.
- Collaborate with Modeling and CFX teams to ensure rig compatibility and deformation quality.
- Develop tools and scripts to automate and streamline rigging processes.
- Ensure rigs are optimized for performance and follow best practices for real-time or offline rendering pipelines.
- Review and give feedback on rigs to ensure high-quality standards are met.
- Mentor and support rigging artists, provide training when needed.
- Troubleshoot and resolve rigging and pipeline-related issues.
- Ensure project deadlines are met while maintaining technical and artistic quality.
Requirements:
- Proven experience as a Lead or Supervisor in rigging for animation, VFX, or game production.
- Expert knowledge of rigging tools and processes in software like Maya, Houdini, or Blender.
- Strong understanding of anatomy, facial expressions, and deformation techniques.
- Proficiency in Python, MEL, or other scripting languages used for tool development.
- Experience with pipeline integration and collaboration with other departments.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Ability to manage and mentor a team, giving clear direction and constructive feedback.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with real-time engines (Unreal, Unity) is a plus.
- Background in character TD, CFX, or technical animation.
- Knowledge of version control systems and asset tracking tools (ShortGrid, Perforce, etc.).
