Boat Mechanic Job Description

A boat mechanic, also known as a marine mechanic, is a skilled tradesperson who maintains, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical and electrical systems on boats and other watercraft. They work on a variety of marine engines including inboard, outboard, and sterndrive motors, as well as onboard systems such as steering, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and repair inboard and outboard engines
  • Diagnose engine and system issues using diagnostic tools
  • Perform regular maintenance (oil changes, filter replacements, winterizing)
  • Repair or replace propellers, gearboxes, and fuel systems
  • Maintain electrical systems including battery and lighting
  • Install and troubleshoot marine electronics (GPS, sonar, radios)
  • Keep detailed records of repairs and maintenance
  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Technical knowledge of marine engines and systems
  • Experience with diagnostic tools and hand tools
  • Ability to read technical manuals and wiring diagrams
  • Problem-solving and mechanical aptitude
  • Certification from a recognized body (e.g., ABYC, manufacturer-specific)
  • Physical stamina and ability to work in tight spaces or onboard boats

Work Environment:

  • Marine repair shops, marinas, docks, or shipyards
  • Indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • May involve irregular hours, especially during peak boating season
