Boat Mechanic Job Description
A boat mechanic, also known as a marine mechanic, is a skilled tradesperson who maintains, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical and electrical systems on boats and other watercraft. They work on a variety of marine engines including inboard, outboard, and sterndrive motors, as well as onboard systems such as steering, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inspect and repair inboard and outboard engines
- Diagnose engine and system issues using diagnostic tools
- Perform regular maintenance (oil changes, filter replacements, winterizing)
- Repair or replace propellers, gearboxes, and fuel systems
- Maintain electrical systems including battery and lighting
- Install and troubleshoot marine electronics (GPS, sonar, radios)
- Keep detailed records of repairs and maintenance
- Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations
Skills and Qualifications:
- Technical knowledge of marine engines and systems
- Experience with diagnostic tools and hand tools
- Ability to read technical manuals and wiring diagrams
- Problem-solving and mechanical aptitude
- Certification from a recognized body (e.g., ABYC, manufacturer-specific)
- Physical stamina and ability to work in tight spaces or onboard boats
Work Environment:
- Marine repair shops, marinas, docks, or shipyards
- Indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
- May involve irregular hours, especially during peak boating season
